As physical therapists, we hear all kinds of myths and misconceptions about physical therapy. Whether it’s outdated advice from decades past or something someone read online, these misunderstandings often prevent people from getting the care they truly need.
Let’s set the record straight and bust some of the most common physical therapy myths — so you can feel better, move better, and live better.
Myth #1: You Need a Doctor’s Referral to Start Physical Therapy
Truth:Not necessarily! Thanks to direct access laws in many states, you can see a physical therapist without a referral from a physician. That means you can skip the extra appointments, reduce healthcare costs, and get started on your path to recovery sooner.
(Every state is different, so be sure to check your local laws — or just ask us!)
Myth #2: Physical Therapy Is Only for Injuries or Post-Surgery Recovery
Truth:Sure, physical therapy is essential after an injury or surgery — but that’s just the beginning. PT is also incredibly effective for:
Preventing future injuries
Managing chronic pain
Improving balance and mobility
Enhancing athletic performance
Correcting posture and ergonomic issues
Even if you're not injured, a physical therapist can help you move more efficiently, improve strength, and feel your absolute best.
Myth #3: Physical Therapy Is Supposed to Hurt
Truth:This one needs a serious reset. While it’s true that PT may challenge your body and sometimes bring mild soreness (especially when working on weak or tight areas), pain is never the goal.
At Out Of The Box PT, we focus on restoring your function and confidence safely and gradually — always working within your limits.
Myth #4: You’ll Only Need a Session or Two
Truth:We get it — we all wish healing was that fast! But real, lasting improvement takes time. While some people experience quick relief, most conditions require a consistent and structured plan to rebuild strength, restore mobility, and prevent re-injury.
We're with you every step of the way, from day one through your final session.
Myth #5: Physical Therapy Is Only for Older Adults
Truth:Not even close! PT is for all ages — from active kids to elite athletes to weekend warriors and everyone in between. Whether you’re:
Bouncing back from an ACL injury
Dealing with back pain from long hours at a desk
Training for a race or competition
...physical therapy is tailored to your unique age, activity level, and goals.
Myth #6: Physical Therapy Is Just a Bunch of Exercises
Truth:While therapeutic exercises are an important part of the process, they’re only one piece of the puzzle. A great physical therapist treats the root cause of your movement issues — not just the symptoms.
We use a wide range of hands-on and high-level techniques, including:
Manual therapy
Postural and movement retraining
Neuromuscular re-education
Personalized education to help you stay pain-free long after your sessions end
Myth #7: Surgery Is Always the Better Option
Truth:Not so fast. Surgery isn’t always necessary — and in many cases, it’s not even the best option. Research consistently shows that physical therapy can be just as effective, if not more so, for conditions such as:
Rotator cuff tears
Meniscus injuries
Herniated discs
Knee arthritis
In fact, PT is often recommended as the first-line treatment before surgery is considered.
