Hi Everyone! I'm Hanna Schenkman, and I am the founder of Out of the Box Physical Therapy.
Out of the Box PT is driven by my passion to help others create the best versions of themselves. Whether that is improving performance in a sport, building up the confidence to try a new activity, recovering and rehabilitating from all types of surgeries and injuries, or maintaining a certain level of health to be able to do what you love!
I created OTB PT to provide activity and sport specific movement assessment and education. It is challenging to move your body the right way, and even more so for the specific activity you love! I grew up an athlete, trying every sport under the sun. You name it: cross country, swimming, softball, dance, gymnastics, tennis, golf, track, pole vault, javelin, high jump, soccer. Some didn't last so long, but long enough to obtain some form of injury or pain that sidelined me for some time. What got me back on the field, in the pool, on the court or on the track was my physical therapist.
From the age of 9, after going to PT for knee pain, I knew I wanted to be a Physical Therapist. I had to stop gymnastics and cross country due to horrible knee pain, and my PT got me back to running that same season! That meant the world to me, and I can only hope to be able to provide that same feeling to all of you.
Fast forward to high school, where I participated in swimming, tennis and track and field. I was a 10 letter varsity athlete throughout my high school career, and experienced chronic ankle sprains, and debilitating back pain my senior year at the end of the swim season. Off to PT again, but this time it was different. I didn't get better in the short 6 weeks that all my previous injuries took.
Finding the right treatment for me, which took me almost 1 year after the onset of my pain, took a toll on me physically and mentally. I'm now a freshman in college, struggling to make it through practice. Finding the right person that not only new what treatment I needed, but who could also relate to me on a personal level was the key to my recovery. They helped me mentally cope with my injury to eventually overcome it, which is just as important as the physical treatment I was receiving. It was at this moment that I knew what kind of Physical Therapist I wanted to be. I wanted to be able to address all of the physical variables that need to be changed, but even more so be the person who listens, relates, and motives my patients to understand that although this may have already been a long road, and even a longer road ahead, they can overcome it and get back to what they love to do.
Fast forward to present time. I retired my cap and goggles and found a new love for CrossFit and functional movement; however, I just got into triathlons last year! I still experience my back pain from almost 10 years ago, but it is much less frequent, and know my "warning signs", so that when it is about to return, I can prevent it entirely, or prevent it from being as severe.
It is NORMAL to experience aches and pains, but when you do, don't ignore them. Find the right person to help you recover, manage, and prevent less frequent and less severe injuries so that you are able to manage your body ON YOUR OWN, with the occasional "tune up".
